HISTORY
The template for Canada’s Coffee industry.
Well known today as the “ King of Cappuccino”, it all started back when Mike Di Donato was in a Toronto coffeehouse in1956, perplexed by the peculiar mug of brownish liquid set before him. One sip of his cup, and his reaction was, “ This is NOT coffee!” Immediately, he set the cup down and began to reminice about the robust elixir prepared back in Milan, Italy. Staring down, reflection in cup, he plotted his mission: to kick-start the Toronto caffeine scene with a sexier, more intriguing coffee.
The coffee crusade begins
Mike began to import these shining, enigmatic espresso/cappucino machines from Milan, Italy that huddled in his narrow West End garage in 1957. Many were sceptical of Mike’s vision, proclaiming it would never take off. They were gravely mistaken…cup by cup, thickened drawn espressos were poured and sipped in that little garage. When word got out, local bakeries, cafes and taverns demanded a glimpse of Mr. Di Donato’s contraptions. Before he knew it, he had line-ups of eager purchasers clamering at his garage door. His espresso enterprise soon flourished, forcing him to rent a tiny shop at Bloor and Lansdown. The Canadian coffee revolution had begun and FAEMA Canada was born!
